Perry is she is Chicago native born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. In fear of stress, her parents didn't want to see her pursue acting before she turned 18. Perry was a shy teenager and was not a performer. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then brought Perry home to California and theater roles were readily available. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC show Scandal. In the same year, she played a young version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a youthful version. The character was assigned by audition despite the fact that she was a cousin with the character.
